The gannets of Ireland’s Eye

The gannets are the most difficult birds to photograph on Ireland’s Eye, since they nest on the highest cliffs and don’t like to be seen. But if you are willing to hike, and climb near the edges of some cliffs, you can get some great photographs in the summer. Take one of the Ireland’s Eye ferries, hike to the far end of the island and climb near the clifftops. There you will see a large colony of sleek, stunning gannets plying the waters, nesting on cliff sides. For more on this remarkable island, read this 2014¬†Irish Times¬†article; for more on the remarkable diving and fishing abilities of gannets, watch this short Smithsonian video.
